I recently went on holiday to Siena in Italy, and if you’ve followed me for a while now, you’ll know that I often share my insights or ‘lessons learned’ whilst on holiday. For me, holidays can be a brilliant opportunity for insights and reflection as you’re out of your normal environment and routines. With less pressure or obligations, you’re more likely to experience life in the ‘present moment’ – which is essentially ‘mindfulness’.
In this state, you’re less stressed, both mentally and physically (unless something stressful is actually happening in the present moment!), and therefore, you often get insights and clarity because you’re not caught up thinking or stressing about the past or future. You’re also less likely to be rushing and busy.
The power of presence
‘Presence’ is one of the main reasons I think holidays are so essential. It’s downtime for your nervous system, which is something we all need in the modern world because most of us are living with some degree of chronic stress. It was when I was in Siena, taking in the Italian culture and beautiful scenery that I was reminded just how important it is to step away from our usual routines and also our everyday environment. It gives our brains a much-needed break. The change of scenery and pace can lead to a state of relaxation that is hard to achieve in our day-to-day lives.
Unexpected insights and clarity
In addition to being good for our health and wellbeing, it’s these holiday moments where people typically experience unexpected insights, brain-wave moments, and richer perspectives. Being in a mindful state allows space for these to surface from the subconscious mind. When we are relaxed and present, our minds can process thoughts and ideas that might be suppressed by daily stressors and routines.
I believe we should look at holidays and breaks, where we can achieve this mindful state, as essential for our wellbeing, our perceptions, and our performance. Taking time to relax and be present can lead to significant personal growth and understanding. It’s not just about physical rest, but about giving your mind the freedom to wander, explore, and reflect. This is often when we solve problems, come up with creative ideas or gain new perspectives on old issues.
A great example of this happened during my time in Siena. I’d been struggling with some aspects of launching my soon-to-be podcast. I was walking around the botanical gardens and decided to sit down in the sun and take in the stunning views of the Tuscan countryside, and in this moment clarity hit me unexpectedly. Without even trying, I suddenly knew exactly how to move forward with those particular details of the launch.
