There’s a certain kind of pressure that doesn’t scream loudly, but quietly chips away at us in the background. Like a grey cloud that’s always hanging overhead, it becomes so familiar that many people stop noticing it altogether – or the toll it’s quietly taking on their energy, focus, and sense of self.
It’s the pressure of everything you feel you should be doing — and this is especially common when it comes to your wellbeing…
Eating better. Moving more. Meditating. Journalling. A gratitude practice. Sorting the life admin. Booking the dentist. Doing the laundry before it piles up again. Decluttering the spare room. Finally starting that Couch to 5K, or training for the half marathon you said yes to months ago…
Why Good Intentions Aren’t Always Enough
All of these pressures often come from genuinely positive intentions – which is a good thing.
But there are two key issues that tend to create the weight:
- First, it’s the sheer number of things we expect ourselves to do.
- Second, it’s how we set those expectations in the first place – often without real clarity, without realistic timeframes, sometimes based on misleading advice about what’s “good” for us, and without considering what’s actually manageable in the context of our real lives.
When You Blame Yourself, Not the Plan
So we set vague goals like “eat better” or “get back into exercise” — or we commit to ambitious plans that don’t stand a chance of fitting into our busy lives. And when we inevitably can’t keep up, we don’t blame the plan… we blame ourselves.
Over time, this erodes self-trust and quietly fuels guilt, shame, and a low-level self-criticism that lingers in the background. And so many of the people I speak to and work with are carrying this invisible weight, often without even realising it.
They’re smart, capable, and doing a lot already, but still feel like they’re falling short of some ideal version of how they should be living.
And when the gap between what you’re doing and what you think you should be doing gets too wide, it can quietly erode your confidence, motivation, and sense of ‘enough-ness’, and deplete your precious energy in the process.
What to Expect This Month
This month, I’m exploring the pressure of internal expectations and the toll it takes on our wellbeing, energy, and self-worth. Not just the pressure to “do it all,” but the pressure to do it all well.
We’ll look at how this mindset forms, how it interferes with sustainable self-care, and how to gently release unrealistic ideals so you can live, work, and take care of yourself in a more realistic, effective and self-compassionate way.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly behind or failing at becoming your “best self,” I hope this month’s reflections offer some clarity, permission, and relief.
And… a Podcast Is Coming!
And in case you missed it, I’m also preparing to launch my new podcast! I’ll be sharing more on that soon — but let’s just say, if you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly falling short of your own wellbeing goals or personal standards… you’re going to love it. It’s all about real conversations, practical insights, and doable strategies – with a focus on letting go of the pressure to do it all perfectly.
Because here’s the irony: once you stop trying so hard to “do it all” and “get it right,” you’ll end up doing better than ever before… trust me.
